Planning your next big project? Here’s a free Gantt Chart template created for you in Tableau! It takes about 10–30 minutes to set it up depending on your project requirements.

A Gantt chart, commonly used in project management, is one of the most popular and useful ways of showing activities (tasks or events) displayed against time.

Software/Tools required:

  1. Google Drive account
  2. Tableau workbook Version 2020.1 and Above ( Required for animation features)

To continue with the tutorial, please ensure that you have the following 2 items :

  1. Tableau Workbook File https://public.tableau.com/profile/foo.yong.long#!/vizhome/GanttChartTemplate_15923123005060/GanttChartTemplate)

2. Google Sheet Gantt chart Template

Step 1-Creating the google sheets:

Create a new Google Sheets in your google drive account. Transfer the contents above the Google Sheet you have just created.

Make sure you remember the name of the file. In my case, the name of my file is called “Gantt Chart Template”.

Step 2 — Establishing a connection:

Open the TWBx file. You should be able to see the view below.

Click on the “Data Source” tab at the bottom left. Once you clicked it, your web browser will be opened, prompting you to log in to your Google Drive account. Log in to the Google Drive account which you have saved the Google Sheet in.

Once you see the authentication screen, return to the workbook file. The Gantt chart in your workbook file should be working by now.

Step 3 — Edit the google sheets to suit your project schedule:

Head back to the google sheets to edit the schedule. Rename the categories in the milestone and tasks, change the start and end dates and indicate a “Yes” to mandatory deadlines to meet and whether the tasks have been completed. Follow the standard Gantt Chart labeling, indicating your main tasks with integers (E.g 1, 2,3,..) and sub-tasks as integers with decimal places (1.2,1.3,2.3, etc). I have edited mine as shown below.

Step 4 — Refresh the data source

Once again, refresh the data source to reflect the updated changes.

Deadlines and the progress report will be updated as well once you indicate a “Yes” on the “Mandatory Deadline” and “Completed” Column.

Step 5— Have fun exploring!

Include new rows in the Google Sheets. Personalize your dashboard with your own title or image!

Do leave a clap and share it with your friends if you find it useful! Follow me as well if you are interested in more Tableau content!
